This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will release two seasons every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others alternatively handling more material or additional to make up for time.
It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
